Why a Sandcastle?
People often ask why I've chosen a sandcastle as the central metaphor for CounSouling.
Why not a stone castle? A fortress. A house. A tree. A labyrinth.
The answer is simple.
Because I believe a sandcastle tells a truer story about what it means to be human.
A sandcastle is temporary, yet meaningful.
Strong in its own definition on the beach, yet capable of changing.
Beautiful because it is unique.
No two are ever exactly alike.
Just as no two lives are ever the same.
Every Life Takes Shape
I believe each of us is like a sandcastle.
Not because we are fragile and at the mercy of the rising tide.
But because our lives take shape.
Grain by grain.
Moment by moment.
Relationship by relationship.
Every experience becomes part of the landscape of who we are.
Every joy.
Every disappointment.
Every relationship.
Every loss.
Every celebration.
Every wound.
Every act of love.
Every moment leaves another grain behind, building on an edge, creating more definition.
Over time, a life begins to take shape.
Not randomly.
Beautifully.
Uniquely.
Like a sandcastle, every human life has its own design.
No two castles could ever be built from the exact same experiences.
No two people have ever lived the same life.
Every castle tells a different story.
The Architecture of Adaptation
What fascinates me most isn't simply that each castle is unique.
It's how each castle becomes organized.
Some castles have tall towers from which they watch the horizon.
Some have thick protective walls.
Some are filled with open courtyards where everyone feels welcome.
Some have carefully hidden rooms.
Some have winding passageways that only make sense once you understand the story behind them.
This is how I understand adaptation.
Adaptation is not the castle.
Adaptation is the architecture.
It is the way our nervous system, temperament, relationships, and experiences gradually organize our lives in order to help
us survive, belong, love, and make sense of the world.
None of us consciously designed our earliest architecture.
We built with the tools we had.
We learned from the people around us.
We responded to the environments in which we grew.
Our architecture reflects extraordinary intelligence.
It tells the story of how we learned to live.
The Enneagram as a Map
This is one of the reasons I value the Enneagram so deeply.
I don't see it as a system that tells us who we are.
I see it as a map of the architectural patterns our attention tends to build.
It helps us notice recurring designs.
The ways we habitually seek safety.
The ways we pursue love.
The ways we protect ourselves from pain.
The ways we organize our attention and energy.
The Enneagram doesn't explain the entire castle.
No map ever could.
But it helps us understand something important about its design.
And once we understand the architecture, we have greater freedom to continue building consciously.
A Sandcastle Is the Beach Experiencing Itself
The deepest reason I've chosen a sandcastle, however, goes beyond psychology.
It reflects how I understand human life itself.
When I look at a sandcastle, I don't see something separate from the beach.
I see the beach taking shape.
The castle is made entirely of the same sand that stretches endlessly along the shore.
Nothing has been added.
The beach has simply become organized into another form.
But then something extraordinary happens.
A human being builds it.
To me, that matters.
Humans are not separate from nature.
We are part of it.
We are made of the same universe we spend our lives trying to understand.
So when someone kneels at the shoreline and builds a sandcastle, I don't simply see a person creating something on the beach.
I see the beach, through the human experience, becoming aware enough to shape itself.
In that sense, a sandcastle is the beach experiencing itself.
This is also how I understand our lives.
I believe we are life experiencing itself.
Or, if you prefer, the universe experiencing itself.
Each of us is a unique expression of something infinitely larger than ourselves.
The Soul and the Ego
This understanding shapes the way I think about the soul and the ego.
Many traditions describe the ego as something to conquer, transcend, or eliminate.
That has never resonated with me.
I don't believe the ego is the enemy.
I believe the ego is the unique organization through which the soul experiences a human life.
Our temperament contributes to that organization.
Our nervous system contributes to it.
Our relationships contribute to it.
Our culture contributes to it.
Our experiences contribute to it.
Together they create the architecture of our castle.
Not to imprison us.
But to help us live.
CounSouling as Awakening
This is why I understand CounSouling as more than therapy.
To me, it is an awakening process.
Not an awakening from yourself.
An awakening to yourself.
It is the gradual expansion of awareness as your soul becomes conscious of the architecture through which it has been
experiencing a human life.
You begin to notice the patterns that once operated automatically.
The beliefs you've carried without realizing it.
The fears you've mistaken for facts.
The roles you've learned to play.
The protective strategies your nervous system developed with remarkable intelligence.
Little by little, your castle becomes visible.
Not so you can judge it.
So you can understand it.
Not so you can tear it down.
So you can inhabit it more consciously.
The goal is not to eliminate the ego.
Without it, there would be no unique human story to live.
The invitation is to become aware of it.
To appreciate its wisdom.
To recognize its limitations.
And to discover that awareness creates choice.
Choice creates freedom.
As awareness grows, your relationship with your castle begins to change.
Rooms you've avoided become places of curiosity.
Walls become understood instead of feared.
Towers become places you can visit rather than places you must always occupy.
The castle doesn't disappear.
It becomes more habitable.
More flexible.
More fully alive.
The Beach Has Always Been There
Perhaps this is the deepest invitation of CounSouling.
To understand the unique shape your life has taken.
To appreciate the remarkable intelligence that designed it.
To continue building with greater awareness.
And to remember that while your castle is unlike any other...
Every grain has always belonged to the beach.
The beach has always belonged to the earth.
The earth has always belonged to the universe.
And you have never been separate from any of it.
Your castle is not something to escape.
It is a unique expression of life itself.
A beautiful, unfinished work of art.
One that continues to evolve with every experience, every relationship, every choice, and every moment of awareness.
That, to me, is the heart of CounSouling.

The castle isn't a childhood artifact frozen in time. Every conversation, every relationship, every loss, every act of courage, every new insight adds another grain of sand. The architecture can be renovated. New rooms can be discovered. Windows can be opened. Bridges can be built. The tide may soften parts of the structure while strengthening others.
In other words, the castle is alive, much like Castita in Encanto.
